Spanish coach Pep Guardiola is preparing to reach a symbolic milestone in his coaching career, as he will celebrate his 1000th match against Liverpool in the Premier League on Sunday.
Guardiola has not hidden his pride in the series of records he has achieved, confirming that facing Liverpool specifically is the most expressive of the meaning of this moment.
Liverpool + Klopp = The Greatest Rivalry
Guardiola said in statements to the English media that if he had to choose one opponent to share this achievement with, Liverpool would be the best:
"There is no greater scenario than this.. the universe decided that the 1000th summit would be against Liverpool. Klopp has been my biggest rival in this country, he has given me a lot, and I miss that competition with him".
Admission of Arrogance.. and Realism About the Numbers
When asked if he knew the number of his victories over 999 matches, he jokingly replied:
"Of course I know.. the numbers are crazy. And I know you will say it: yes, I am arrogant! But the numbers are amazing and hard to replicate. If I started from scratch, I might not reach them again".
He added: "You cannot claim not to think about them when you reach this stage".
Mutual Respect and a Struggle to Raise the Bar Higher
Guardiola emphasized that every stage in his competition with Liverpool has been a reason for the development of both teams:
"Liverpool has pushed us to be better.. and we have pushed them to do the same".
Values Do Not Change
The Spanish coach continued that his football principles have remained constant throughout his career:
"Even if I play with less quality or make a wrong decision or the opponent is better.. I have not betrayed what I believe in. I always want to finish the match feeling satisfied with the team's final performance".
Astonishing Career Achievements
During 18 years of coaching, Guardiola has amassed 40 titles in his career, including 18 titles with Manchester City alone, creating one of the greatest modern football projects at the local, continental, and even international levels.
