The President of the German Parliament, Julia Klöckner, called for a comprehensive ban on prostitution within the country, considering that current legislation is no longer able to provide adequate protection for women, and that Germany has turned into "Europe's brothel." Her remarks came during a speech she delivered at the "Heroine Award" ceremony organized by the Alice Schwarzer Foundation in Berlin.
Support for the Scandinavian Model
Klöckner, who belongs to the Christian Democratic Union party, expressed her conviction that regulating prostitution as a "normal profession" actually harms women and does not provide them with guarantees. She proposed adopting what is known as the "Scandinavian model" implemented in Sweden and Norway, which criminalizes clients and pimps instead of the workers in the field, while providing support and social rehabilitation programs to help women exit this activity.
Criticism of Institutional Inaction
Klöckner accused the official authorities of failing to protect women despite existing legislation, pointing out that the prostitution law and the law protecting workers in this sector have not achieved a tangible impact in reducing violence and exploitation, emphasizing that the practical reality "remains the same" without real improvement in women's conditions.
