Elon Musk Sparks a New Cosmic Debate: A Project to "Dim the Sun" to Combat Global Warming

Elon Musk has stirred up a storm again.. but this time not with a new rocket or a super electric car, but with a proposal that seems closer to science fiction: launching a massive network of smart satellites capable of adjusting the amount of solar radiation reaching the Earth, in an attempt — as he says — to curb global warming.

The idea that Musk published on the "X" platform is based on solar geoengineering, which means reducing a small portion of sunlight in a calculated manner to create a cooling effect. Musk asserts that the satellites will operate on solar power, and artificial intelligence will read the climate conditions and decide when and where to reduce radiation.

While the American billionaire has not revealed precise details about the nature of AI's role in the new system, he insists that the project is theoretically capable of stopping global warming, and even "reversing" it if necessary, citing historical periods when the Earth turned into something resembling a "snowball" 635 million years ago.

However, the uproar did not take long. Climate and environmental law experts harshly criticized the idea, considering it a dangerous gamble with an already fragile climate system, and it could increase its disruption instead of repairing it. Lily Foer from the International Environmental Law Center (CIEL) described these technologies as "horrifyingly uncertain," while biologists warned that blocking just 1% of sunlight could harm the dynamics of photosynthesis upon which all life depends.

Even on social media, comparing the project to Mr. Burns' scene in "The Simpsons" was one of the most circulated comments. Users felt that no institution or individual has the right to "manipulate the global climate" alone.

Glaciologists and climate scientists reminded that the real solution is not a technical workaround to the crisis, but rather a drastic reduction in carbon emissions, while others emphasized that a project of this scale affecting the entire planet requires a strict global agreement before any implementation.

Despite all that.. Musk seems to be moving forward confidently, relying on his historical space record after launching thousands of satellites as part of "Starlink," and a fortune that allows him to bear the costs of projects of this kind.
