Egyptian Health Officials Warn of Increased Respiratory Risks from Smoking Amid Dust Storms

Egypt is currently facing a significant weather event characterized by dust storms, thunderstorms, and unseasonably cold temperatures.

The Ministry of Health has issued a warning to the public, stating that smoking during this time can significantly increase the risk of respiratory infections and worsen symptoms such as congestion and breathing difficulties, particularly due to elevated dust levels in the atmosphere.

The ministry highlighted that individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions are particularly vulnerable to complications. They are urging smokers to quit immediately to safeguard their health and that of those around them from severe respiratory issues.

According to meteorological forecasts, wind speeds are expected to reach between 35 and 50 km/h, which will stir up dust and sand across various regions, potentially leading to reduced visibility on the roads.

The authorities also anticipate significant disruptions to maritime activities in the Mediterranean Sea, with wave heights possibly reaching 5.5 meters. Moderate to heavy thunderstorms are expected in Alexandria and along the northern coast, with varying intensity as they reach Cairo.

Just yesterday, Greater Cairo was enveloped in a severe dust storm that generated thick clouds of yellow dust, causing visibility to drop below 500 meters and disrupting both air and sea travel.

Officials are advising the public to exercise caution while driving, particularly in the morning when dense fog is expected, and to avoid standing near trees, billboards, and light poles during windy conditions to ensure safety.

In light of these adverse weather conditions, the Ministry of Health's message is clear:

Quit smoking now to protect your lungs!
