As winter approaches, many notice that they catch colds and respiratory viruses repeatedly, leading them to say, "I am always sick." However, experts confirm that the reason is not weak immunity as some believe.
Continuous exposure to infections is the main factor
Dr. Dean Blumberg, a pediatric infectious disease specialist at the University of California – Davis, explains that the main reason for repeated infections is repeated exposure to viruses, especially in crowded places or when interacting with infected individuals.
More at-risk groups: children and daycare workers
Dr. Tim Hendricks, the medical director at AdventHealth Centra Care in Florida, points out that the groups most susceptible to seasonal illnesses are families with young children, teachers, and daycare workers.
Young children have not yet developed good hygiene habits, so they cough and sneeze, easily spreading infections to those around them. As children grow older and improve their health behaviors, the risk of infection gradually decreases.
Prevention and personal hygiene
To reduce the risk of repeated infections, doctors emphasize that prevention relies on personal hygiene, such as regular hand washing, using sanitizers, and avoiding touching the face.
Supporting immunity to protect the body
In addition to hygiene, experts recommend supporting the immune system through:
Sufficient sleep
Balanced nutrition
Good hydration
Managing stress and anxiety levels
Hendricks concludes by saying, "We cannot avoid every cold, but keeping the body clean and healthy significantly reduces the chances of infection and limits the recurrence of seasonal illnesses."
