Turkish Teacher Sentenced to 130 Years for Sexual Assault of Students

Turkish Teacher Sentenced to 130 Years for Sexual Assault of Students

A Turkish court has sentenced a teacher to 130 years in prison for sexually abusing multiple students at a private school in Kocaeli province, igniting significant public outcry. Human rights advocates have labeled the ruling an "ethical and organizational scandal," calling for enhanced oversight of private educational facilities in Turkey.

Details of the Case and the Teacher's Trial

Reports from Turkish media indicate that the first chamber of the criminal court found the teacher, identified by the initials "M.A.", guilty of sexual offenses against six students over a two-year period, without any reduction in his sentence. He was acquitted of charges related to threatening children due to a lack of evidence.

The 45-year-old defendant was present during the proceedings alongside the families of the victims and his defense team, marking this as one of the most widely publicized cases in recent history.

Victims' Families Demand Stringent Penalties

During the court session, the families of the victims stressed the necessity for the harshest penalties, asserting that their children have endured "psychological trauma that cannot be erased." There has been a surge of calls on social media for strict accountability for those involved in child abuse, from individuals to institutions.

Lawyers representing the victims confirmed that the defendant repeatedly exploited the children and urged the court to impose maximum penalties for each offense without leniency.

Defendant's Legal Team Calls for Reconsideration

Conversely, the defendant's legal team has maintained his innocence, requesting a review of the case and further investigations, including witness testimonies and site evaluations. The teacher has consistently denied the allegations, claiming: "I have not committed any disgraceful act in my life. I am a father, a husband, and a good teacher. I demand my acquittal." However, the court found his statements unconvincing given the evidence and testimonies from the children.

Severe Sentence Justified by Repeated Offenses

The court explained its decision for a 130-year sentence by noting the defendant's repeated offenses and his professional responsibility as a teacher to protect, not exploit, children. The court also confirmed that at least one child suffered complete sexual assault.

Calls for Enhanced Oversight of Private Schools

This case has reignited discussions regarding abuses in both private and religious schools, with child rights organizations advocating for stricter regulatory measures and harsher penalties to prevent similar crimes, which are viewed as a significant threat to child safety in Turkey.
