Syria's Education Ministry Bans Non-National Anthems and Slogans in Schools

The Syrian Ministry of Education issued a directive on Monday that prohibits the recitation of any slogans or anthems in public and private schools across all educational levels. This ban will remain in effect until the national anthem of the Syrian Arab Republic and the official ministry slogan are adopted through constitutional and legal processes.
The circular, addressed to provincial education directors, states that "it is strictly forbidden in all public and private schools to recite any unofficial anthem or slogan." The ministry emphasized the importance of adhering to these instructions and monitoring their implementation, with a requirement to report any violations to the ministry.
This decision follows the circulation of videos on social media showing students reciting unapproved slogans in schoolyards, sparking significant debate within Syrian society.
The new academic year commenced on September 21, with over 4 million students participating.
