Sudan’s Sovereign Council Orders Release of 400 Female Prisoners in Omdurman

This decision was made during Burhan's inspection visit to the women’s prison located west of the capital, Khartoum, as part of efforts to assess prison conditions amid the ongoing conflict in the country.
Burhan stated on his account on the platform "X":
"Today, I visited the women’s prison in Omdurman and instructed specialists to immediately release 400 inmates, including mothers with their children, and to annul all public law-related fines."
He also announced directives for the legal reclassification of the inmates and a review of the justice system for the accused, in coordination with relevant authorities. This aims to expedite judicial processes and ensure legal rights, particularly for those affected by the consequences of the war.
The Sovereign Council President emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of legal procedures and the justice system to alleviate the impacts of armed conflict and ensure fair law enforcement, considering the exceptional circumstances Sudan has faced since the outbreak of conflict in mid-April 2023.
This decision comes at a time of increasing local and international calls for improved humanitarian and legal conditions in the country, particularly for the most affected groups, including women and children.
