Severe Flooding in Safi, Morocco Claims 21 Lives Amid Heavy Rainfall

On Sunday, December 14, 2025, the coastal city of Safi, located 300 kilometers south of Rabat, experienced a tragic event as sudden flooding led to the deaths of 21 individuals and injuries to 32 others.
Local authorities reported that intense thunderstorms caused unprecedented water flows within just one hour, inundating the city's streets.
The flooding destroyed 70 homes and shops in the historic city center, while strong currents swept away approximately 10 vehicles and damaged key roadways, disrupting traffic.
Social media footage depicted powerful currents sweeping through the city, with muddy water flowing along the streets, carrying away both vehicles and debris.
Images also showed part of a mausoleum partially submerged, as civil defense teams deployed boats to rescue residents trapped in various locations.
Rescue operations continue, with teams searching for any missing persons, while authorities are working to secure affected areas and provide comprehensive support to those impacted by the floods.
Meanwhile, Morocco's General Directorate of Meteorology announced snowfall in mountains above 1,700 meters, along with warnings of heavy rain and local storms expected across various regions of the kingdom in the coming days.
The Directorate anticipates rainfall between 40 and 60 mm in other parts of Morocco, raising concerns about the potential for further flooding in additional areas.
This natural disaster underscores the significant challenges Morocco faces due to climate change, which is increasing the frequency of such devastating events.
