Egypt Transitions to Digital Travel: Elimination of Passport Cards at Airports

In a significant move reflecting the rapid digital transformation in Egypt, the Ministry of Civil Aviation has announced the complete elimination of the passport card at all Egyptian airports, marking the end of an era of reliance on traditional travel procedures.
Minister of Civil Aviation, Sameh El-Hanfy, confirmed that this decision will take effect at the end of January as part of a comprehensive plan aimed at simplifying travel procedures, reducing passport control wait times, and improving the overall experience for travelers from arrival to departure.
* Digital System Replaces Paper Forms
During a televised address on Sunday night, the minister explained that the alternative digital system is fully operational, relying on electronically recorded data in the passport without the need for manual paper forms, thus ending the use of the traditional passport card for arrivals and departures.
El-Hanfy noted that this initiative is part of the government's efforts to enhance services for travelers and tourists, improving operational efficiency at Egyptian airports in line with international standards.
* Electronic Visa Under Consideration
In the same context, the Minister of Aviation revealed that the Cabinet, chaired by Dr. Mostafa Madbouly, discussed the progress of the pilot implementation of an electronic visa issuance system, which complements the digitalization process and facilitates entry for tourists and visitors to Egypt.
* Ongoing Airport Upgrades
The removal of the passport card follows a series of significant updates at Egyptian airports, including:
• Expansion of electronic gates
• Enhancements to security systems
• Strengthening electronic connections with the passport authority
These updates aim to increase security levels, expedite procedures, and reduce congestion in arrival and departure areas.
* Full Implementation Expected Soon
The new system is expected to be fully implemented across all international airports in Egypt by February, starting with Cairo International Airport and extending to major tourist airports like Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh.
With this decision, Egypt concludes the use of paper procedures at airports, ushering in a new era of faster, easier, and smarter travel, aligning with the state's digital transformation goals and attracting increased tourism and investment.
