Apple Introduces End-to-End Encryption for Messaging Between iPhone and Android via RCS Protocol

RCS Support in iOS 26
Apple has clarified that the current version is iOS 18, which means support for RCS encryption will arrive with the next major update, anticipated to be iOS 26. This update will also feature enhancements to RCS, such as direct emoji interactions instead of explanatory text messages, alongside options to edit, delete, and reply to messages between users of both platforms.
Gradual and Experimental Rollout Signals
Indicators from certain French telecom packages, along with beta versions of iOS 26.3, suggest that some companies may enable the encrypted messaging feature via RCS by default. These improvements are expected to gradually reach users with the iOS 26.4 beta before the official feature launch.
A Smoother and More Secure Experience
By introducing encryption and modern feature support between the two systems, Apple aims to deliver a more secure and seamless messaging experience, bridging the gap between iPhone and Android in instant messaging services, aligning with contemporary messaging applications like WhatsApp and Telegram.
