Sweden's Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed concern on Sunday regarding what he termed the 'threatening rhetoric' from the US administration towards Greenland and Denmark, a long-standing ally of the United States.
Statements from the Swedish Prime Minister
During a defense conference, Kristersson stated:
"The United States should express gratitude to Denmark, which has been a steadfast ally over the years."
He emphasized that Sweden, along with the Nordic countries, the Baltic states, and several major European nations, supports Denmark's position. He warned that any potential US takeover of Greenland would breach international law and might encourage similar actions by other nations, describing this as a 'dangerous path.'
International Reactions
Earlier, French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian called on the United States to cease its coercive tactics to ensure Denmark retains control over Greenland's territories.
President Donald Trump has previously made remarks advocating for US control over Greenland, citing national security concerns related to China and Russia. He claimed that Denmark has failed to adequately protect the Arctic island and invest in its resources and strategic position.
Greenland and Denmark's Position
The people of Greenland, along with their political leaders, firmly oppose any notion of the island becoming part of the United States, asserting that its future should be determined by its residents. Since 1951, a defense agreement between the United States and Denmark has allowed US forces limited operations on Greenland's territory, contingent on prior notification to local authorities.
