Sudan’s Burhan Orders Release of 400 Female Inmates Amid Ongoing Conflict

This decision was announced during Burhan's visit to the women's prison located west of Khartoum, where he assessed the conditions of the facility amid the ongoing conflict affecting the nation.
Burhan shared on his account on the platform "X":
"Today, I visited the women's prison in Omdurman and instructed the specialists to immediately release 400 female inmates, including mothers with their children, and to waive all financial fines related to public rights."
He also indicated plans to reclassify the legal status of the inmates and to review the justice system in collaboration with relevant authorities. This initiative aims to expedite legal proceedings and safeguard the legal rights of those impacted by the war.
The Chairman emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive review of legal procedures and the justice system to alleviate the consequences of armed conflict and ensure equitable application of the law, particularly in light of the exceptional circumstances that have arisen since the conflict began in mid-April 2023.
This decision comes as both local and international voices increasingly call for improvements in humanitarian and legal conditions in Sudan, particularly for the most vulnerable populations affected by the conflict, especially women and children.
