Severe Flooding Hits Iraq as Meteorological Authority Warns of Ongoing Instability

Severe rainfall has affected multiple provinces in Iraq over the past few hours, leading to widespread flooding. The General Authority for Meteorology and Seismology has issued warnings of ongoing atmospheric instability for the next four days.

Weather Forecast Overview

On Tuesday, the authority announced that Wednesday's weather will be partly clear to overcast in central and southern regions, with rain persisting in the eastern areas. Conditions are expected to improve in the afternoon, although local flooding remains a possibility. Maximum temperatures are projected to range from 12 degrees Celsius in Sulaymaniyah to 24 degrees Celsius in Basra.

According to the weather bulletin, Thursday is anticipated to bring relative stability, characterized by clear skies and some clouds in the central and southern regions, while the northern areas may experience scattered rain showers. A slight increase in temperatures is expected in the center and north.

On Friday, cloud cover will increase, bringing rain showers to the western sections of the central and northern areas, while the south will remain clear, with a minor drop in temperatures in the north.

During the weekend, particularly on Saturday, the authority predicts more turbulent weather, with clouds and scattered rain affecting all provinces, alongside a decrease in temperatures in the central and southern regions.

Impact of Flooding and Road Closures

Local reports indicate that the heavy rains in northern and northeastern Iraq have caused significant flooding, submerging streets and elevating river levels. This has resulted in the closure of key roads, notably the Kirkuk–Baghdad route in the Tuz Khurmatu area due to rising water levels.
