Egyptian officials have successfully disrupted a cyber fraud scheme aimed at visitors to the Grand Egyptian Museum by identifying three counterfeit ticket sales websites falsely claiming affiliation with the museum.
The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism has confirmed that these websites are not connected to the museum and has reiterated that the only legitimate site for purchasing tickets is www.visit-gem.com. The ministry has urged both citizens and tourists to remain vigilant and avoid engaging with any fraudulent platforms.
Legal Actions Underway
The ministry has stated that all necessary legal measures are being pursued against these fraudulent websites, with plans for their permanent closure and accountability for those responsible. Continuous monitoring of online activities is also being conducted to identify and shut down any violations promptly.
Visitor Numbers Surge
Since the commencement of trial operations in its main halls, the museum has experienced a significant increase in attendance, receiving between 10,000 and 15,000 visitors daily during peak periods. The Ministry of Tourism aims to attract 5 million visitors annually, particularly following the full unveiling of the Tutankhamun collection.
Countries such as Germany, Italy, and France, along with the United States, are among the top sources of foreign visitors. The museum also sees a substantial number of local Egyptians and students, making it a target for cyber fraud schemes seeking to exploit the high visitor turnout.
