Four men were killed in a hippo attack while illegally fishing along the shores of Lake Naivasha in central Kenya, according to local reports.
A group of 14 men was fishing at night near the lake, situated approximately 80 kilometers northwest of Nairobi in the Rift Valley region, when they were unexpectedly attacked by several hippos.
While some members of the group managed to swim to safety, others were either attacked directly by the hippos or drowned while attempting to escape, leading to the deaths of four individuals.
Family members of the victims stated that the young men were seeking to provide additional financial support for their families through fishing.
Hippos are known for their territorial aggression, particularly when they feel threatened or when humans encroach on their habitat, especially during nighttime.
In light of this incident, operators of tourist lodges and camps around Lake Naivasha have reiterated their warnings to both visitors and local residents to avoid the water at night and to keep a safe distance from wild animals, given the history of fatal encounters in the area.
