Alaska Floods 2025: Widespread Destruction and Displacement of Thousands in the Natural Disaster

The state of Alaska in the United States has witnessed unprecedented flooding since the beginning of October 2025, as powerful storms, including remnants of Hurricane "Haalong", led to record water levels, resulting in widespread destruction of infrastructure in several villages, prompting thousands of residents to flee and seek immediate support from the federal government.

* Disaster Details

On October 8, 2025, a series of storms swept through coastal and riverine areas of Alaska, resulting in massive flooding that extended to parts of the north, west, and southwest of the state.

Strong winds and deep waters submerged many homes and roads, causing severe damage to infrastructure, including vital facilities.

* Forced Displacement and Massive Destruction

The destruction in the affected villages led to the displacement of more than 2,000 people to safer areas such as schools and urban areas.

Alaska Governor Mike Dunleavy stated that the Kenai Peninsula suffered severe damage, with about 90% of buildings destroyed, while the destruction rate in the Koyukuk area was around 35%, with homes and roads in surrounding areas destroyed.

* Calls for Declaration of "Major Disaster"

For his part, the Governor of Alaska has urged the White House to declare a major disaster in the state to facilitate access to federal support, including funds and logistical assistance to meet the needs of those affected.

Dunleavy stated that many homes have become uninhabitable and that the federal government must intervene quickly to alleviate the suffering of residents.

* Political Support

In a related context, several U.S. senators, such as Dan Sullivan and Lisa Murkowski, sent a letter to President Donald Trump urging him to urgently approve the declaration of "federal disaster", which would enable the state to obtain more necessary resources to support rescue and reconstruction efforts.

* Future Outlook

Rescue teams continue their efforts to search for the missing and assist those affected, amid warnings of further storms that could exacerbate the situation in the coming days.
